NOVAS/NOVITÀ/NEWS

📢 We are thrilled to share this news!

The short film S’Orcu, directed by Antoni Cònzu in 2023, has been selected for competition at the Babel Film Festival, in the “Minorías Linguisticàs” section, for the Ostana Award.

From June 8th to 13th in Cagliari.

A work that speaks of symbolism and agrarian rites that have survived for over a thousand years — in Siniscola, across Sardinia, and throughout the Mediterranean peoples.

Conceived and entirely filmed among the limestone rocks of our sacred mountain: MONTALBO.

The mother tongue remains the same: the Sardinian language, in Siniscola ‘s version.

Among the collateral awards presented at #BabelFF9, two in particular reflect the main linguistic minorities in Italy: the Italymbas Award and the Ostana Award.

📍 The Italymbas Award is assigned by representatives of linguistic minorities who attend decentralized screenings in the festival’s partner cities (Ostana, Martignano, Udine, Catania).

📍 The Ostana Award: Writing in the Mother Tongue is given to the best Sardinian film by a jury selected by the namesake festival, held annually in Ostana — an Occitan village of just 85 inhabitants in the Po Valley at the foot of Monviso — to promote cultural works in minority languages.

Here are the films selected for the two juries:

You can preview the trailer for the video “S’Orcu, Agricultural Rites in the Carrasecàre Thiniscolesu,” which we will present on January 16, 2024, at 4:00 PM in the Sinis/Mele Court on Via Nurra in Siniscola.

This short film showcases the symbolism of fertility agricultural rituals, which were held annually in pre-Christian times in Mediterranean communities as acts of indulgence towards Dionysus, aiming to receive water from the sky and abundant harvests. It represents the ongoing struggle between man and nature in the endless cycle of life.

From an idea by the “S’Assotziu Orcu ‘e Montiarvu.” Directed by Antoni Cònzu.

Ancient Siniscolan Carnival

On February 17, 2024, the mask of S’Orcu ‘e Montiarvu, along with other masks, will make its second outing of the year on the day of the Ancient Siniscolan Carnival. The beast is forcefully brought into the town, which accompanies it on the path to the square along with the other Carnival masks, to sacrifice it to the god who, at that point, satisfied with its blood and appeased, can address the people to promise abundant water and good harvests for the upcoming agricultural year.
